Fat Grafting, also known as Autologous Fat Transfer or Structural Fat Grafting, is a surgical procedure that involves restoring lost volume in the face with the patient’s own fat, taken typically from the abdomen. This procedure is effective in treating sunken cheeks, facial lines, acne scars, and other areas of lost volume that have developed as a result of aging, sun damage and other conditions. Unlike temporary fillers consisting of synthetic materials, fat grafts are taken from the patient’s own body, and as a result cannot cause an allergic reaction. The fat is naturally accepted by the body. Autologous Fat Grafts typically largely survive permanently. Fat Grafting allows for 3-D facial sculpting in addition to the 2-D lifting of a Facelift. Most Facelift patient’s benefit from Fat Grafting, as well.
Fat Grafting Procedure
During the Fat Grafting procedure, fat is harvested from the donor area by inserting a cannula and suctioning out the fat, similar to liposuction. This is done under local anesthesia with IV sedation to minimize any patient discomfort. The harvested fat is then processed so that only the fat cells are grafted. Once the fat is ready to be placed, it is injected into the targeted area through a small blunt cannula until the desired appearance is achieved. This procedure is performed as an outpatient basis in your doctor’s office or at Northwest Florida Surgery Center. Actual treatment time tends to be brief.
Results and Recovery
Patients may experience mild swelling and bruising after the Fat Grafting procedure. Fat grafts tend to be permanent and are considered safe for patients since no foreign material is being injected into the body.
Risks Of Fat Grafting
While Fat Grafting is considered safe for most patients, under-correction or loss of volume with time is possible. Repeat grafting can be readily performed. These risks can be minimized by choosing an experienced doctor to perform your procedure, and following his instructions after surgery.
Blepharoplasty can rejuvenate puffy, sagging or tired-looking eyes by removing excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. It may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to improve sight by lifting droopy eyelids out of the patient’s field of vision. The procedure is usually performed under twilight anesthesia in as little as 45 minutes. Blepharoplasty can be combined with a facelift or BOTOX® treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet or dark circles under the eyes.
Incisions are made along the eyelids in inconspicuous places (in the creases of the upper lids, and just below the lashes on the lower lids). Dr. Kelley removes excess tissue through these incisions and then closes them with very fine sutures. In the case that no skin needs to be removed, a transconjunctival Blepharoplasty, where the incision is made inside the lower eyelid and there are no visible scars. Dr. Kelley will likely perform fat grafting if “tear troughs” exit below the lower eyelids.
Endoscopic Browlifts can revitalize drooping or lined foreheads, helping you look less angry, sad or tired. Using the minimally invasive (endoscopic) method, browlifts involve the removal or alteration of the muscles above the eyes to smooth lines and raise the eyebrows for a more youthful appearance. The procedure is often combined with other operations such as Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and facelifts to improve the look of the eyes and other areas of the face.
While browlifts are typically performed on patients aged 40-70 to counteract the effects of aging, however sagging of the brow or excessive lines of forehead will benefit from a browlift. The procedure is usually performed under twilight anesthesia as an outpatient in approximately an hour.
Patients who, for one reason or another, are not candidates for a QuickLift – but complain mainly of marked looseness of their neck may benefit from an Anterior Cervicoplasty. This surgery provides a significant improvement of the neck, if they are willing to exchange a barely noticeable scar. This is performed as an outpatient, requiring approximately an hour.
Chemical Peels provide for an improvement of the fine wrinkling and lines of the areas about the mouth and eyes. they can be as superficial as a Blue Peel or deeper as a Phenol Peel. Chemical Peels can be performed with or without IV sedation. The typical convalescence is 1-2 weeks.
The neck may sag as a result of aging or weight loss, and is often affected before the face. Loose neck muscles can lead to an appearance of bands on the neck and drastic drooping of the skin. A Neck Lift is a surgical procedure that can smooth and tighten the skin on the neck and provide a more toned and youthful appearance. The results of this procedure offers a drastic improvement to the appearance of the neck. Neck lift is always performed during a QuickLift..
A Neck Lift procedure includes a Cervicoplasty (to remove excess skin), a Platysmaplasty (to alter the muscle bands of the neck), and Liposuction (to remove excess fat of the neck).
Although many people do not notice it, a weak chin can significantly affect facial appearance, causing the nose to look larger or the neck to look loose. Chin Augmentation is often performed to provide a more balanced facial appearance and create a chin that is stronger, wider or longer, depending on each patient’s individual goals. Also known as mentoplasty, Chin Augmentation is often performed in conjunction with Rhinoplasty or Quicklift in order to achieve optimal results.
During the Chin Augmentation procedure, an implant made of silicone is inserted into the chin through as small incision underneath. This procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to perform, with patients usually able to return to work and other regular activities within a few days. Chin Augmentation is considered a safe procedure with few risks, which can be further reduced by choosing an experienced surgeon to perform your procedure.
One of the most common plastic surgery procedures, Rhinoplasty is performed to reshape, reduce or augment a person’s nose, remove a hump, narrow nostril width, change the angle between the nose and the mouth, or to correct injury, birth defects, or other problems that affect breathing. Results depend on the patient’s nasal bone and cartilage structure, facial shape, skin thickness and age. Insurance may cover Rhinoplasty if it is done for reconstructive or medical reasons.
Rhinoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia and requires one to two hours.
Revision or Secondary Rhinoplasty corrects deformities caused by a previous operation on the nose. It is a more difficult procedure to perform than primary Rhinoplasty because there is less cartilage to work with and there may be scarring or tissue contracture (tightening). However, skilled plastic surgeons can often improve both the appearance and the function of the nose.
Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to correct large, protruding or otherwise deformed ears for a more proportionate appearance. Unlike most other plastic surgery procedures, Otoplasty is most commonly performed on children, as the ears are typically nearly finished growing by the age of four to five. Early treatment helps reduce teasing and any affect on self-esteem that large or misshapen ears might cause. Otoplasty is often be performed to correct ears damaged by an accident or injury.
During the Otoplasty procedure, an incision is made behind the ear to remove or reshape the cartilage and adjust the size and position of the ears for a more natural-looking appearance. For children, this procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, while adults usually only require local anesthesia and IV sedation. Both ears may be operated on in order to achieve better balance. The results of the Otoplasty procedure are permanent and scars behind the ears are not noticeable.
Scar Revision is performed to reduce the appearance of scars caused by injury or previous surgery. Scars are by definition permanent, but surgery can narrow, fade and otherwise reduce the appearance of severe or unattractive scarring, which is especially helpful in areas of cosmetic importance such as the face and hands.
There are many surgical methods of Scar Revision, only some of which may be appropriate for a particular type of scar or its location. These include surgical excision, skin grafts, flap surgery and Z-plasty (repositioning a scar so that it aligns with the face and is less noticeable). The effectiveness of scar reduction depends on a number of factors, including the nature of the injury, your body’s healing mechanism, the size and depth of the wound, how much blood supplies the area and the thickness and color of your skin.
As we age, our skin begins to change as a result of several different life factors. The natural collagen within the skin begins to diminish and skin may sag and droop. Smoking, alcohol consumption, sun exposure, nutrition and more can also lead to the development of wrinkles and fine lines within the skin. Other skin conditions such as acne, brown spots and chicken pox can leave unattractive blemishes on the skin.
Laser Skin Resurfacing is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and other skin irregularities. It offers patients advantages over traditional resurfacing procedures such as chemical peels and dermabrasion.
